Real Life Red Carpet Glam

I love award season and especially look forward to the Oscars each year. Tim and I try to go see as many of the nominated movies as we can so we know what’s going on and also to have a better chance at winning Oscar bingo. Except that I often have a different opinion of who should win, but that’s the fun of it all. My favorite move of the year was Brooklyn. I knew it wasn’t likely to win anything, but I would vote for it. It’s a must see in my opinion.

So I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t have any occasions in the near future that require a red carpet gown. But it is fun to get glammed up every once in a while for a fancy night out. so I’m sharing a few of my favorite pieces for amping up your date night outfit in a mostly affordable fashion.

1. Rose Gold Heals – I’ve recently become a huge fan of rose gold and I love it in these heels. I can’t actually find the exact ones in the picture but I’ve found some similar ones for you. Rose gold is like the cool girl version of pink. And the more metallic the better as far as I’m concerned. I love this pair too in a rose gold glitter.

2. Zoya Nail Polish in Freja – I wore this nail polish last night to the Oscar party our friends hosted. It’s a shimmery gunmetal with a tiny hint of blue metallic. It’s like a smokey eye for your nails. Zoya has recently become my favorite nail polish line. It’s non-toxic and is easy to apply. I’m not very good at painting my own nails so I’m happy when I find a polish that I can do at home and not make a complete mess of myself.

3. Faux Fur Jacket – This is such a great finishing touch to a night-on-the-town outfit. Even faux fur can look expensive. This one is from Forever 21 and is currently on sale for less than $50 bucks. I’m also in love with this blush pink one. If you don’t like fur you can always go for a suede look like this one or the tuxedo-style blazer to finish off the look.

4. Kendra Scott Earrings – I love everything Kendra Scott does. She is constantly releasing new versions of her trademark style. This stand out pair is a mirrored crystal rock framed in gunmetal. As you can see, I’m into the gunmetal thing these days. I consider it the rock star version of silver.

5. Bobbi Brown Eye Palette – What a perfect palette! Lots of sparkles plus just the right matte neutrals. Love it!

6. Heather Offord Box Clutch – I love clutches. I try not to buy too many because practically I don’t have a ton of occasions to bring them out. But they can add such a great pop to your outfit. The box clutch is very in right now and the more color the better. There are a lot of affordable options like this one and this one.  Or if you want to continue with the faux leather I love this one.

7. Faux Leather Leggings – Yep, we’re faking it again. These faux leather leggings are $50 bucks and yet another fabulous way to glam it up. Pair them with your faux fur jacket and you’re money!

8. Veuve Clicquot Rose – Champagne always makes me feel fancy and how gorgeous is the bottle?! It really does come in this beautifully pink box and it is equally delicious. I’ve given this as a gift on multiple occasions because its a double bang for your buck with the lovely presentation (an expensive buck but worth the splurge!). I usually buy it at my local grocery store and its often at least a little bit on sale.

9. Sequin Dress – Saving the best for last, what better way to feel fancy than to cloth yourself in sequins. I love the color dimensions in this dress. Revolve Clothing is my favorite online store for finding unique and fun dresses. I also love this onethis one, and if you want to splurge I love this one.

Here are a few more goodies to check out. Happy shopping!

For Your Benefit: A little fabulous for you and your makeup bag

Benefit Makeup2_edited-3Benefit Cosmetics: lollitint cheek & lip stain | instant brow pencil | high brow | gimme brow

I have a great affection for Benefit products. As a West-Coaster, I’m fortunate to have one of their adorable boutique stores within walking distance of my office. I like to pop in every so often to see what’s new and let the girls get creative on my face. I usually can’t get out of there without buying one of their fun new products. The glam-girl displays, bright happy colors and creative packaging are an easy mood booster. When I find a line of products I really enjoy, I like to learn more about who is behind the magic. So I’ve been reading up on the story behind Benefit Cosmetics and I was thrilled to learn that the whole thing began 39 years ago when twin sisters from farmville Indiana (that’s not a real town. I made it up, but they did live on a farm in probably a very small town that may or may not have a name) took the leap of faith and journeyed to San Francisco to open a tiny little makeup shop in San Fran’s Mission District. Since I spent the first 22 years of my life growing up in Indiana (and I now live in the Bay Area), this was a very fun fact for me. That tiny shop eventually evolved into the Benefit we know today… from their super fun makeup and skincare line to their gorgeous BrowBar and Waxing Lounges, I would say they made it! These ladies are seriously cool and I think you would enjoy reading more about their story here and here.

One of the original and most iconic products is the Benetint Lip and Cheek Stain. I’m loving that they have ventured into more colors because this stain is sort of magical. My favorite (for now) is the Lollitint. It’s a lovely purply-pink color that puts just the right pow on my cheeks. And since it’s sheer it leaves a perfectly natural glow. I use it everyday, even if I’m just doing a quick barely any makeup day, it just helps me look alive. I like to apply it with a foundation brush to get the most even color. I just dab some of the product onto my brush and swipe along my cheek, basically where you would apply your blush. If I’m doing a full makeup day, I put blush on top of it to really set in the color. The stain provides the staying power for all day color, which I love because I’m not really a touch up throughout the day girl. The stains are awesome on your lips too. Some of the colors come in lipgloss sizes, great for on the go.

My second favorite Benefit product is the Gimme Brow. This has been such a great discovery for me. It’s a fiber gel that glides easily through your brow adding volume and definition. It adheres to the hairs and leaves a really natural look. I usually layer it on top of the Instant Brow Pencil, but its great by itself too. And with the Gimme Brow I feel like I can’t screw it up because it just sticks to the hairs and I can easily wipe off any excess so I don’t end up looking like a clown who drew on my eyebrows. I have both colors since I always seem to be changing up my hair color (my really blonde friends are hoping they come out with one shade lighter… hint hint Benefit:-).

I just recently purchased the High Brow Glow and it’s been a fun addition to may makeup routine. I love anything with glimmer so I went with the Glow (although the original High Brow is great too). The High Brow Glow gives a subtle brightening just below the eyebrows, the inside corners of the eye and anywhere else you want a little bit of glow. The other day I put it all over my eyelid like a shadow (perfect for those not really putting on makeup days).

There are lots of resources for purchasing Benefit products, which is good since not everyone can just swing in to the boutique on their lunch break (sorry to rub it in!). Sephora, Ulta and Macy’s are all great places to find and explore the many Benefit products. is a great source for fast free shipping once you know what you like and just need to refill.

I hope you Benefit from this post (I could not help it, I love to play on words!). I would love to hear what you’re loving in your makeup bag these days. Please share!

Let’s Make Up

Makeup bag overview

I’m really excited for this post because #1: it’s my first real blog post! and #2: I’m stoked to share my totally awesome find, and it was from Target which also makes it totally awesome. And that is my lead-in to this 80’s inspired feature. I’m not completely sure this is what Sonia Kashuk was channeling when she designed this super fun makeup bag collection, but for me it is a glorious union of the 80’s bold color combos with a chic current design. Looking at my new bag in the morning makes me happy, so I felt the need to share it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

It all began when I was packing for a weekend trip to meet up the girlfriends and I realized that my makeup bag was a sad situation. If I hadn’t thrown it away already (as fast as I possibly could) I would show you the before and after. But let’s be real, you don’t want to see that.

So let’s talk about this amazing bag. Not only does it look fabulous, it also has some really great features that make it quite functional for daily life. But before we get to the functional stuff, I just want point out some of my favorite esthetically pleasing features. The colors are are fantastic… the perfect hot pink, lime green, sunny yellow, a hint of teal blue, set against the crisp white background with perfect black detailing. Then the topper is the metallic gold steaks and the gold zippers. Genius! I’m drooling over my bag right now as I type!

The functions are great too. It opens in 2 separate compartments. On one side you have a large zipped section that’s clear so you can find things easily. Opposite this is a perfect spot for your make up brushes. And there is more space underneath for extra storage.

The other side of the bag is fabulous too with 2 small clear pouches that velcro into the bag so you can easily take them with you if you want. The overall bag material is great too, very soft to the touch and easy to wipe down.

The makeup bag is part of Sonia Kashuk’s Art of Beauty Limited Edition Collection. The design comes in several shapes and sizes, which are all available at Target. You can check it here, but I noticed there aren’t any more of this particular bag available online so try plugging in your zip code to find availability in a nearby Target. You may want to hurry before they sell out!
